Reworked Painting from 2007

before

24" x 48" revised
I recently bragged on facebook about having some good "reworking" sessions. Here is one. I think this one goes into the "Love Hovel" bin now.

Yes, you have not failed to improve each of these.

Surely you have some ruined failures hiding on your floor? ;)

Not that the before version here is uninteresting, but you take it from being somewhat confined by a specific, though not explicit (to me), narrative, to something more broadly mysterious. Not to say that a specific narrative is inherently limiting -- I don't think that at all. Nor do I mean that you HAD to remove the sign and the figure, though you did and it works. But it was not a simple "this then that" formula -- clearly the painting is reconceived. Yay.

I have so many ruined paintings it's not funny. Some panels seem jinxed. No matter how thoroughly I paint out or sand down all previous work, the work I do on those panels just always fails to go anywhere.

There is a certain type of narrative I slip into, that nags at me. It's not bad, per se. It just wraps things up too neatly and too simply.

This one looked like it was about you making paintings (?). Not a bad thing, I agree. Though, somehow felt limiting here.

This painting had so many incarnations, and so many lost paintings in it, from reworkings, that I grabbed onto this ending point. So I guess it was about 'making a painting', out of sheer frustration.
