May Flowers (1997)

Ha ha! I just rediscovered this image (curiously in my "cats" photo folder). Yep, it's a 'face scan' and I used it for my show invite card. "May Flowers " was exhibited at Utrillo's Gallery in 1997. There were about a dozen 10" x 8" paintings on board, display "floating" about an inch off the wall. It was a very sweet little show.

"Naive 2"

"Botero's Mum"

"Naive 3"

"Venus Craft Balls"

Fast fun paintings, reasonably priced and sold, good natured artin' all around.....oh, those were the days.
UPDATE: more of these paintings here.

This is when I really started studying untrained artists' work. I had quite a collection of thrift store paintings. I was really interested in the specific formal quirks that made them so interesting. I had a 'thrift art test', where I'd place my work, or another's work, next to a striking naive painting. Does my fine art piece at least hold it's own here?

It's a pretty tough test.

These are funny. Well, not ha-ha funny. "Venus Craft Balls" might be my favorite. Although, the saturated Botero's Mum keeps freaking me out. It is an orifice of some creature.

Word Veri says that I've got "nansors"

zinc oxide for the nansors

After the show, I met with a collector who offered to purchase all the remaining paintings. I freaked a bit and quickly removed Venus Craft Balls from the offerings. Still have it.

These pieces remind me of the craftsy sorts of pictures of flowers my mom used to do and that we always had hanging on our walls-closest thing to original art I ever saw as a kid. They weren't paintings, but some sort of sewing kit thing from the seventies. Anyway yours are much nicer, and I am quite drawn to them, they have that same sort of seventies thrift shop feel. In a good way, of course.

I like Naive 3 best I think, although I get the allure of Venus Craft Balls. I would have kept it too.

Word veri says ablyt, almost means something, but like the things my mom used to make, i can't quite think of it.....

left untreated, nansors become ablyt

I do still have an unlinked web page from my older site. This has more of these flower paintings, pause cursor over them for titles.

I think I need to take a fast fun painting break too.

Oh, they're all gone? There are a few I would like to live with. "Botero's Mum," and the final pink one on the linked page especially.
